I like to think of the first panel as a culmination of all the NPC comments you'd normally get if you stumbled across such a scene in an RPG. XD;

One other fun fact not touched upon: the village square was paved quite deeply with stones, and is hence the least affected area.

Well, it makes sense. It's the area most-traveled, presumably, and thus, the area which needs to have the most deep foundations. (Especially if stones are occasionally taken from it.)

The wood smells funny... that line stood out to me. Why dose the wood smell? Hum...
I may be reading way too far in to it: maybe it's just a mold/rot reference and not anything at all significant. XD

Damp wood doesn't burn properly so a lot of the volatiles driven off go of in partially burned acrid, eye burning smoke. Dowse a fire with a bucket of water sometime and take a good smell of the sour, nasty smell that results...

Interesting question!

Here's my answer: even if Kylie could have used her Lethiace at this point (which she cannot), her Lethiace is Ice and not Water, so she could have only frozen the water in the wood. XD; But even Water Lethians would have trouble drawing water out of the wood because they aren't exactly Benders. XD; But they could try, and probably succeed to some degree of success depending on their proficiency level in their Lethiace. :)
